World’s lowest power op amp?

Milpitas, Calif.—Intersil Corp. has launched a family of power-efficient, rail-to-rail input/output operational amplifiers and comparators that includes what the company claims is the new industry leader in power efficiency.

According to Intersil, the ISL28194 delivers a supply current rating of 330nA typical and 450nA maximum, which it says is less than half the supply current consumption of competitive devices.

This family, part of Intersil's new pinPOINT Precision Analog Product Line, also includes an op amp that delivers more bandwidth and typically consumes 1 microamp of supply current (ISL28195) and two comparators that typically consume 800nA (ISL28197) and 2.5 microamps (ISL28196).

A single-supply input voltage range from 1.8V to 5.5V makes the pinPOINT line well-suited for low-power precision applications running off of two 1.5V alkaline batteries such as smoke detectors; toxic gas detectors; and temperature, humidity and pressure sensor/monitors. Other target applications include low-power solar cell devices.

The devices are designed to deliver battery savings and extend operation. Their supply current ratings mean they consume less power while the devices are in operation. Second, the devices feature an enable/disable pin that can throttle the power consumption down to 2nA when not in use.

Operation is further extended by the input common mode range of these devices that extends all the way to the positive and negative input rail. This rail-to-rail performance enables the op amp to consume more of a battery's available energy.
